What
is Cheongye Kwan?
Cheongye
Kwan is an amalgamated system of Korean Martial Arts training,
characterised by fast, and effective techniques. It is an
all-around program that offers self-defence training, physical
exercise, and artistic expression, all taught by an experienced
professional instructor.
What do you wear to
train in?
We wear a
uniform called a "Dobok." It is steeped in Korean
tradition and history. The Dobok consists of a white jacket, white trousers, and
belt, which are derived from traditional Korean clothing.

How
long does it take to be proficient and reach Black Belt?
The
time it takes to become proficient at Cheongye Kwan varies depending
upon the ability and dedication of each student, but in most cases the average
time will roughly be 38 months (3.2 years). However, the
rushing of belts is most discouraged, as the grade worn does not
indicate the overall knowledge of the wearer.
I
am not very flexible, can I still learn at Cheongye Kwan?
Yes
you can. Flexibility is very practical for high kicks and it also
helps to minimise strains, pulls and sprains, but it is not an
absolute must at the start, because you will develop it as you
progress. Speed has a big influence as well. You will see that
by using proper technique and speed, you will kick fairly high,
even if you are not the most flexible person in your class!
At
my age, am I too old to start Martial Arts?
You
are never too old to start Martial Arts, as long as you are
physically able to train. At Cheongye Kwan we are much broader than
just sparring, the most important aspect of your training to us is that you
feel good about your own progress on both the physical and mental
levels.
I
am not as fit as I would like to be, will that be a problem?
No,
start training right away! Cheongye Kwan will help you to get fitter
in a short amount of time. You will begin to see definite signs of
improvement in your fitness, stamina and your general feeling of
well being in no time.
I
really want to start Martial Arts, what kind of a club should I look
for?
The
first thing you should do is visit a club. Talk with the instructor
and observe how he/she is teaching. It is very important that you
feel comfortable with your instructor and the way classes are being
taught. You must be able to develop trust in your instructor. The
style you chose is not as important as the faith you must have in
your teacher.
How
often will I get a new belt colour?
Grading
tests are carried out on a 3 month basis (except the two before
black belt) and successful completion of each test will result in you
moving up to the nest belt colour.

Are
the Martial Arts an expensive activity?
All
sports have a degree of cost involved, but rest assured that the
Cheongye Kwan is a non profit organisation and all costs are kept
low. We have a great insurance package and all of our instructors
are very highly trained. However, what Cheongye Kwan will give you
as a student is priceless!
Their is also NO CONTRACTS to sign at Cheongye Kwan, and NO
MEMBERSHIP fees!
simply lesson fees and a yearly insurance renewal (licencebook).
Are
all Black Belts Teachers at the Cheongye Kwan?
No,
very few Black Belts teach, many people prefer to remain
students and continue learning as a student, following the
teacher that they have spent many years being guided by and learning
from. However, all Black Belts at
Cheongye Kwan are trained in First Aid and teaching techniques, as
well as taking registered instructors courses and additional courses
for running a Cheongye Kwan school.
