What is the Cheongye Kwan?

The Cheongye Kwan is an amalgamated system of Korean Martial Arts training, characterised by fast,

and effective techniques. It is an all-around program that offers self-defence, physical exercise, and artistic expression,

all taught by experienced professional teachers and Master grade chief instructor.

Also included in the curriculum are Martial Arts weapons, Academic Education and Leadership Skills.

What should I wear to come to a lesson?

As a beginner, new students are asked to come to class wearing lose fitting clothing, such as tracksuit trousers and a

T-shirt, but after a while you will need to buy a uniform, which we call a "Dobok" in Korean.

How long does it take to be proficient and reach Black Belt?

The time it takes to become proficient at the Cheongye Kwan varies depending upon the ability and dedication of each

student, but in most cases the average time will be a little over 3 years. However, the rushing of belts is discouraged.

I am not very fit or flexible, can I still train at Cheongye Kwan?

Yes! Fitness and flexibility are very practical, but they are not an absolute must at the start, you will develop both of them

and more as you learn and progress through the system.

Am I too old to start Martial Arts?

You are never too old to start Martial Arts, as long as you are physically able to train. At the Cheongye Kwan we are

much broader than just sparring, the most important aspect of your training to us is that you feel good about your own

progress on both the physical and mental levels.

I really want to start Martial Arts, what kind of a club should I look for?

The first thing you should do is visit a club. Talk with the instructors and staff to observe how they are teaching.

It is very important that you feel comfortable with your instructors and the way classes are being taught.

How often will I get a new belt colour?

Grading tests are carried out on a 3 month basis (except the two before black belt, which are both 6 months each).

Successful completion of each test will result in you moving up to the next belt colour.

Is the Cheongye Kwan an expensive activity?

All sports have a degree of cost involved, but rest assured that the Cheongye Kwan is a non profit organisation and all

costs are kept low. Their are also NO CONTRACTS to sign at the Cheongye Kwan, and NO MEMBERSHIP FEES!

simply lesson fees and a yearly insurance renewal (your licence book).

Are all Black Belts Teachers at the Cheongye Kwan?

No, many Black Belts prefer to remain students and continue learning as a student, following the teacher that they have

spent many years being guided by and learning from. However, all Black Belts at Cheongye Kwan are trained in First

Aid and teaching techniques.

Are injuries common at Cheongye Kwan?

As with participation in any sport, their is always a small chance of picking up an injury, however, our classes are highly controlled and the intensity and contact level is often determined by the individuals training together. The primary goal of

the Cheongye Kwan is to provide authentic Martial Arts training, but in a safe and rewarding environment.

Does the Cheongye Kwan enter competitions?

In general, we do not participate in Martial Arts competitions, because we are not a Martial Sport. Our purpose of training

is to build Martial Spirit and good character through Martial Practice. However, if a student wishes to try competitions, we

have access to many Korean Martial Arts tournaments and at all levels that they can compete in.

Are their Adult and Junior classes?

At the moment, all students train in classes together, but we will soon be switching to a new timetable, which can be seen

on the classes page of this website.

Can I have Private Lessons?

Some people prefer private tuition, because they cannot make it to classes at the scheduled times, or they simply want a

more focused and personalised training session, especially if a grading is approaching, or maybe they just prefer the

one-on-one private lesson structure. At Cheongye Kwan we offer this method on an hourly basis with a 5th Degree Master.

Which Martial Art is right for me?

Decide what you are looking for in a Martial Art - throwing, wrestling, kicking, etc, and then visit a few clubs to see how the different classes are run. Speak with the instructors and students there and if you are happy, then try a class, you have

nothing to lose! Remember that once you pick a school and an instructor, you will hopefully spend the rest of your life

on your Martial journey, so make sure the school, the teachers and the art are right for you.
